The trek

On the first morning as we headed out for a long day we passed this mother and father in mourning after burying one of their children.

Dallin was part of the Colborn family for the trek and Monique was part of the Fapula family. Our families were in the same company.


The trek certainly was not an easy experience but I think it was a valuable one. It was great to watch as the youth came together and worked for a common goal.
When we first got there we went to to the Tragedy Springs memorial. We got to go up around the path and see the grave of the three murdered Mormon Battalion members. While the tree that was carved is no longer there( we were told it actually in a museum somewhere) there were other markers there.
After we were separated into our families we set off. Getting those handcarts up and down hill was a difficult task but everyone succeeded at it. When the Boys were called away to war I was most impressed with the girls. While some of the girls in the stake did complain for the most part everyone looked at the huge hill required of them and pushed forward. So many of them going up and down that hill several times to help insure all carts made it to the top. What a wonderful experience for them to learn to serve and help each other.
Again this was a wonderful experience and I was deeply impressed with our youth..
